The thought that there is a secret hidden somewhere in their past life is a thought that excites many children.

Likewise the thought that at any moment the family pet might actually discover a really strange animal lurking in the garden is bound to excite.

These are in fact the starting points of two extraordinary books with its secret past and “Mrs Poddle and Eric” with its strange creature.

Aunty Marmalade

This notion of the secret past is the starting point of “Aunty Marmalade” – the new book from Ruth Young suitable for key stage 2 children.

Aunty Marmalade is a book that comes with an “extra” – for as the book is written by a teacher of key stage 2, it comes with a free set of teaching notes that will help maximise the impact that the book has on the children who either read it, or have it read to them. It can be used by children as their own reader, or can be read to the class. Either way it makes a riveting topic for discussion.

The setting of the story concerns a girl called Florence who goes to visit her eccentric godmother, Aunty Marmalade, in her cottage by the sea.
As she begins to see that there is a secret in her family that really does affect her, she also begins to have scary and unexplained experiences. Her belongings are moved around, and she has a feeling that she is being watched.

This story really will entrance the children and encourage them in their exploration of books.
